Era: Early 20th century
Origin: France
Material: Handwoven natural willow
Dimensions: 21” L × 21” H
A piece I have loved for years, this beautiful French gathering basket comes from my own private collection.
There is something wonderfully nostalgic about an old basket—the thought of something so humble being woven entirely by hand and then carried through the rhythms of everyday life. Perhaps filled with flowers gathered from the garden, vegetables from the day’s harvest, or provisions brought home from a village market.
This one is especially beautiful for its generous scale and extraordinary open weave. Slender lengths of willow radiate across its softly rounded form, meeting a substantial handwoven handle at the center. Decades of age have given the willow a wonderfully varied patina, from warm honeyed brown to deep chestnut.
Today, she is every bit as beautiful left empty as she is filled—resting beside an armchair with a favorite linen throw, holding dried hydrangeas or garden clippings, or simply displayed as the sculptural object she has become.
A soulful remnant of another time, collected in France and treasured in our own home before being offered here.

CONDITION
Beautiful antique condition with the timeworn character we cherish. The willow has developed a rich, varied patina with expected surface wear, color variation, irregularities, and areas of age throughout. Individual willow ends and signs of old handwork remain visible and are part of the basket’s character.
Please refer closely to the photographs for condition and details. Due to its age, we recommend this piece primarily for decorative or light-use purposes.
