Era: Late 19th to early 20th century
Origin: France
Material: Terracotta
Dimensions: 6.25” D × 4.75” H
Made for the traditional process of draining fresh cheese, this old French faisselle is a beautiful survivor of the farmhouse kitchen.
Handmade in terracotta, the vessel is pierced throughout to allow the whey to drain from the curds, while its original fitted lid makes this example particularly charming. The warm, earthy surface has developed a wonderful patina from age and use, with subtle variations in tone that speak to its utilitarian past.
Pieces like this were never intended to be decorative, which is precisely what makes them so appealing today. The simple form, rows of hand-pierced holes and beautifully worn terracotta feel at home among old pottery and kitchen wares.
I especially love this one displayed with the lid slightly askew, allowing a glimpse of the pierced interior and the story of what it once was.
