Antique French Glazed Terracotta Cruche

$222.00

Era: Circa 1880–1920

Origin: France

Material: Glazed Earthenware

Dimensions:  11” H × approx. 5.5” W

DESCRIPTION

Rich with color and the unmistakable character of old French pottery, this antique terracotta cruche is a beautiful expression of the everyday objects that once filled country kitchens and rural homes.

Its rounded, generously proportioned body is finished in a deep reddish-brown glaze, while warm honey and ochre tones spill naturally from its shoulders in long, irregular drips. No two sides are quite alike, and it is this beautiful unpredictability of the glaze that makes the piece so captivating.

Two substantial handles frame its narrow neck, while a petite pouring spout recalls its original purpose as a vessel for carrying and serving water. Once a familiar sight in the French countryside, these humble vessels were made for daily rituals, long before their sculptural beauty would be appreciated in a collected home.

At 11 inches tall, this cruche has a particularly lovely scale. Substantial enough to stand beautifully on its own, yet compact enough to tuck into a kitchen shelf, an antique cupboard, or a thoughtfully layered vignette.

We especially love it paired with old wooden cutting boards, a stack of well-loved French books, or alongside other pieces of aged pottery. Its deep, earthy color brings warmth and depth to a room, while the cascading glaze offers a beautiful reminder of the hand and character behind these utilitarian objects.

A wonderful piece of French country history, where the beauty of something ordinary has only deepened with time.
