DESCRIPTION
Once an ordinary staple of the French household, these old Le Chat soap cubes have become wonderfully nostalgic objects in their own right.
Made in Marseille, where the Le Chat name dates to the 19th century, these substantial blocks of soap were created for the practical rituals of washing and laundry. Decades later, time has done what it does so beautifully—the soap has dried, its edges have softened, and its original color has mellowed into a warm, honeyed patina.
The embossed Le Chat markings are still visible, giving each cube the unmistakable character of an old French household object. I love one resting in an antique ironstone dish, tucked beside a stack of linens, or simply displayed on a shelf in a laundry room, kitchen or bath.
A humble piece of everyday French life, made special simply because it survived.
