DESCRIPTION
A beautifully primitive antique French wooden sellette, or small display stool, estimated to date from the late 19th to early 20th century.
Hand-carved from solid wood, the piece has a wonderfully sculptural quality, with deeply faceted, hand-hewn surfaces that reveal the marks of its maker. A traditional trefoil-shaped cutout punctuates the base, adding a subtle decorative element to an otherwise simple utilitarian form.
Years of age and use have given the wood a rich, dark patina, with variations in tone, worn edges, old marks, and irregularities that make the piece especially beautiful.
Originally made as a small functional stand or stool, today it works beautifully as a decorative sellette — used to elevate a piece of pottery, a small vessel, or another collected object.
