French Glazed Stoneware Cruche

$218.00

Era: Late 19th / Early 20th Century

Origin: France

Material: Glazed Stoneware

Dimensions: 12.75” H x 5” handle to handle

DESCRIPTION

A beautifully sculptural antique French stoneware cruche, finished in a soft, creamy glaze with the subtle imperfections and character that make old utilitarian pottery so compelling.

The vessel has a wonderfully rounded, almost ovoid form, rising to a narrow neck framed by two substantial loop handles. A petite pouring spout sits just below the shoulder—a charming detail that speaks to the piece’s original purpose as an everyday vessel for storing and serving liquids.

Its glaze is especially lovely. Warm ivory and oatmeal tones are scattered with tiny dark mineral flecks, while fine crazing and gentle variations in the surface reveal the hand and firing of the pottery. Along the base, a small area of exposed terracotta provides a beautiful contrast to the pale glazed body.

At nearly 13 inches tall, the cruche has wonderful presence without feeling oversized. Its quiet palette makes it particularly easy to live with—beautiful displayed alone, tucked among old books and artwork, or layered with other collected French pottery.

A soulful piece of French utilitarian pottery whose simple form has become beautifully sculptural with time.
