French Leather Bénitier | Holy Water Font

$228.00

Era: Late 19th to early 20th century

Origin: France

Material: Leather, Metal, Glass, Brass

Dimensions: 10.75”H x 6.5” W

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

A beautiful remnant of the quiet rituals once woven into everyday life, this French wall bénitier brings together personal devotion and the artistry of an earlier time.

Its gracefully shaped surround is covered in deep brown leather, finished with delicate gold floral detailing that has softened and worn with age. At its center rests a dark patinated metal crucifix, set against a subtly patterned ground scattered with tiny gilded accents. Below, a clear glass holy water vessel is held within an ornamental brass band, beautifully detailed with classical garlands.

Traditionally hung near the entrance of a home or beside a bed, bénitiers held holy water for the small, familiar gesture of blessing oneself upon entering, leaving, waking, or retiring for the evening. Once part of the everyday rhythm of Catholic homes, these intimate devotional objects were often kept and treasured across generations.

What makes this example particularly special is its combination of materials — aged leather, faded gilding, darkened metal, warm brass, and clear glass — each carrying its own evidence of time.

Beautiful displayed on its own or collected alongside old religious artwork, devotional objects, and antique books.

THE DETAILS

+Origin: France
+Period: Late 19th to early 20th century
+Collection: Le Sacré
+Material: Leather, metal crucifix, glass holy water vessel, brass detailing
+Dimensions:10.75”H x 6.5” W

CONDITION

This is an old devotional piece with visible wear consistent with age and previous use.

The leather shows rubbing, surface wear, small losses, and areas of deterioration, particularly along the outer edges. The gilded decoration has faded and worn in places. The crucifix has developed a darkened patina, and the brass surrounding the glass font shows natural age-related variation.

The glass holy water vessel remains in place and appears intact in the photographs.

The reverse retains its metal hanging ring. As with any antique wall-mounted object, we recommend inspecting the existing hardware and using an appropriate wall anchor before hanging.

The age-related imperfections are part of the history and character of this piece. Please review all photographs closely for its complete condition.
