Era: Circa 1890–1920
Origin: France
Material: Metal
Dimensions: 12” H × 4” W
A beautiful antique French altar crucifix, richly detailed and quietly devotional, with the sculptural presence of an object made to be both sacred and enduring.
The silver-toned cross is ornamented with floral medallions at each end, framing a finely rendered figure of Christ at its center. Below, an elaborate pedestal base is worked with scrolling foliate motifs, giving the piece an architectural quality reminiscent of the ecclesiastical objects once found upon private altars, chapel tables, and devotional settings throughout France.
Time has softened the metal beautifully, leaving variations in tone and areas of darkened patina that bring depth to its intricate detailing. We especially love the contrast between the restrained form of the cross and the more elaborate, almost baroque quality of its base.
Standing 12 inches tall, it is substantial enough to display alone yet beautifully scaled for layering among old books, religious art, candles, or a collection of treasured devotional objects.
A soulful piece for the collected home, where its age, ornament, and quiet sense of history are very much part of its beauty.
